About The Position

Reporting to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor at a multi-custody female correctional facility, this position is located in the Maintenance Department and is responsible for performing preventive and routine corrective maintenance tasks and ensuring that assigned systems, equipment and facilities are maintained in a safe and efficient manner. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. Anson Correctional Institution houses female offenders in medium and close custody housing units. Anson CI offers a wide variety of educational, vocational, and training programs. Correction Enterprises operates the offender packaging operation at Anson, a partnership with Union Supply Direct through the Prison Industry Enhancement Program (PIE). Family and friends can order a package of goods from a pre-approved shopping list to send to an offender. Orders are packaged by offenders and shipped quarterly.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented working knowledge of commercial/industrial maintenance.
  • Journey level in mechanical/plumbing.
  • Journey level in HVAC/refrigeration.

Responsibilities

  • Possessing multiple trade skills to allow individual to deal with a variety of maintenance tasks that will be dealt with on a routine basis, such as emergency generators, gate operators, plumbing systems, electrical systems, and security doors.
  • Preparing preventive maintenance reports and maintaining inventory of repair parts.
  • Functioning at two journey levels, one for mechanical/plumbing and the other preferably HVAC/refrigeration while performing at the semi-skilled and unskilled level in other trades.
  • Supervising semi-skilled and unskilled labor, including offenders to assist in completing tasks.
  • Following oral and written instructions.
  • Performing heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Understanding and working from sketches or penciled drawings.
  • Reading and interpreting building codes and blueprints.
