About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees, responsible for safeguarding lives and property, and the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole officers, and divisions like Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations, and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. This position reports to the HVAC Supervisor and is primarily responsible for providing journey level work in Heating/Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Hot Water Supply, Plumbing, and Food Service Equipment at a multi-custody female correctional facility. Anson Correctional Institution houses female offenders in medium and close custody housing units and offers various educational, vocational, and training programs. Correction Enterprises operates an offender packaging operation at Anson in partnership with Union Supply Direct through the Prison Industry Enhancement Program (PIE).

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.

  • Documented knowledge of practices, methods, materials and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Responsibilities

  • Completing special repairs and assignments that are received by work orders from authorized personnel.
  • Identifying the cause of a problem and determining materials and tools and method of repair.
  • Carrying out repair procedures independently on most jobs.
  • Performing preventative maintenance functions as required and outlined in the preventative maintenance plans.
  • Training and/or supervising the work of offender workers as needed.
