Maintenance/Construction Tech II (Temporary)
About The Position
This temporary position is assigned to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC), in Raleigh, North Carolina. The ASC is a state-of-the-art facility housing regulatory laboratories and administrative offices. The position provides an opportunity to develop skills in mechanical systems, electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry. The Facility Maintenance section maintains buildings and equipment at the ASC and three veterinary division satellite laboratories. Duties may also include groundskeeping and incinerator operation. The position is expected to last 11 months and averages 40 hours per week, with a work schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The hourly pay rate is $18–$21, based on education and relevant work experience. This temporary position does not offer leave or retirement benefits. Temporary employees averaging 30 or more hours per week annually may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan. Permanent and time-limited North Carolina State Government employees must separate from their current position to take a temporary position, and temporary employees may hold only one state temporary assignment at a time.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED and one year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Assigned trade areas include commercial general maintenance, carpentry, mechanical systems, electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC, groundskeeping, and incinerator operation and maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of practices, tools, and materials used in general building maintenance, carpentry, and/or equipment repair.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively and understand verbal and written work instructions.
Responsibilities
- Perform general facility and building maintenance at the Agricultural Sciences Center and three veterinary division satellite laboratories.
- Repair equipment.
- Assist with groundskeeping as needed.
- Assist with incinerator operation and maintenance as needed.
