This position is the first level of a five-level wastewater plant maintenance series. The Maintenance Apprentice assists in installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial machinery and mechanical systems, performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance, learns to diagnose and repair mechanical machinery related to wastewater operations, and assists with equipment disassembly and rebuilding.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED or any combination of equivalent experience and education.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to obtain mobile equipment certifications
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing principles
  • Knowledge of welding principles
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operation principles
  • Skill in adhering to safe work practices
  • Skill in utilizing basic hand and power tools
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
  • Skill in communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with coworkers and the Public.

Nice To Haves

  • This is a career ladder position. This position will receive an automatic progression to Industrial Maintenance Mechanic 1 when the incumbent has achieved the required minimum qualifications and licenses/certifications for the next position in the series.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial machinery and mechanical systems.
  • Performs routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs under the guidance of a senior mechanic.
  • Learns to diagnose and repair mechanical machinery, such as pumps, motors, gear reducers, and valves related to wastewater operations.
  • Assists with the disassembly and rebuilding of equipment, such as centrifuges.
  • Troubleshoots mechanical systems to identify and address problems.
  • Performs minor fabrication of parts as required.
  • Assists with the repair and maintenance of digester building equipment, cell gates, cell blowers, and water lines.
  • Must meet regular attendance requirements.
  • Must be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers and citizens.
  • Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • This position is deemed essential during inclement weather situations, and must report to or remain at work, even when administrative closings are announced, as determined by the Department Head.
