About The Position

The Prince William County Department of Public Works Construction & Operations Division is seeking a reliable, hard-working individual to join their Drainage Maintenance Team. This team is crucial for maintaining the county's stormwater infrastructure, which protects roads, houses, rivers, and streams. Employees in this role are considered essential personnel and may be required to provide support during inclement weather and emergency events. The position offers opportunities for growth and is ideal for individuals with a positive attitude and strong work ethic, as no prior experience is necessary. The Maintenance & Operations Worker will perform maintenance activities on Prince William County's stormwater infrastructure, including maintaining over 1,000 Stormwater Ponds and 680+ Miles of Stormwater Easements. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining equipment, performing strenuous physical labor in various weather conditions, conducting routine inspections and preventive maintenance on stormwater management facilities, operating tools and vehicles safely, and monitoring inventory. The role requires following directions, completing tasks efficiently, adapting to change, and working effectively within a team.

Requirements

8th grade education.
0-12 months of related experience.
Ability to read and write standard English at an 8th-grade level or higher.
Valid Virginia Driver's License.
Must pass Pre-Employment Physical.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
May be required to lift a minimum of 50 pounds regularly; up to 80 pounds occasionally; and up to 125 pounds as applicable.
May be required to respond to infrequent emergencies after normal working hours, as needed.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or GED is preferred.
At least 1 year of experience performing grounds maintenance, construction, landscaping, or other manual tasks.
Knowledge of construction methods and procedures related to drainage, road maintenance, and improvements.
Ability to work well with others in all types of conditions.
Ability to use hand tools and power tools in a safe manner.
Working knowledge of technological tools, such as laptops, mobile apps, GIS systems, and desktop software.
Punctual tendencies and a positive attitude.
Obtain a CDL at a future time (if obtained, employee would be required to comply with alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance with Federal Transit Administration Mandate Title 49 Transportation §382, Subpart C).

Responsibilities

Maintain 1,000+ Stormwater Ponds and 680+ Miles of Stormwater Easements.
Operate and maintain assigned equipment and tools, including water jet cleaning, hydro-excavation, and construction equipment.
Perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions.
Perform basic and routine inspections and preventive maintenance activities on stormwater management facilities.
Safely and properly operate hand tools, power tools, small equipment, and vehicles.
Monitor and maintain materials, inventory, and supplies.
Follow directions, complete tasks within specified time frames, adapt well to change, and work effectively as part of a team.
