About The Position

This is a non OTETA position. Perform skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of water and/or wastewater systems or acts as a lead worker. Manage assigned clerical staff and subordinate professional personnel in one or more sections of the department. Take responsibility for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned teams. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district’s policies and applicable state and federal laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. All employees are expected to demonstrate regular and predictable attendance; to support the District’s vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan; to engage in civility, respect, and professionalism; and to maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of their positions.

Requirements

  • One (1) years of increasingly responsible experience in construction, maintenance or general repair work
  • One (1) year experience in water and/or wastewater systems maintenance.
  • Must have a Class E drivers license and comply with HCPS' Safe Driver Plan.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals.
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Speak effectively before groups of individuals.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Compute rate, ratio, and percent and draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled maintenance repair and installation of valves, meters, gauges, pumps and associated utility machinery, equipment and lines.
  • Perform major and minor repairs to water and waste water sewer lines.
  • Lay, cut, caulk pipe.
  • Tap mains and service lines.
  • Install and set water meters.
  • Flush and rod out clogged sewer lines.
  • Operate machines and equipment necessary to perform maintenance of water and sewer lines such as air hammers, air compressors, pipe pushers, hand tools, pumps, torches and drills.
  • Make inspections, read meters and keep basic records necessary to the utility system.
  • May instruct, lead and supervise lower level workers.
  • May operate light to medium sized construction or maintenance equipment under supervision of a qualified operator or crew leader.
  • Require a general understanding of water and/or waste water tools and equipment as well as their basic function, use and safe operation in a manner consistent with current District and OSHA regulations.
  • Make reconnaissance surveys of buildings, lift stations, settlement ponds, water plants, waste water plants and other structures/facilities to determine the extent of repair work necessary or the cause of alarm in the utility system.
  • Assist in installing, maintaining, altering and repairing utility trade related component in district facilities.
  • Operate all hand tools and power tools to perform functions for specific trades.
  • Adhere to principles and practices of safe use including but not limited to operation of equipment, tools, materials and HCPS owned vehicles including maintenance of such equipment of tools.
  • Perform "clean up" and work site/equipment restoration activities, i.e., removing excess repair materials, clean any spills or disbursements, wipe down and clean effected surfaces.
  • Respond to emergency "call-outs" after hours.
  • Attend safety and other related training required by HCPS to keep abreast of current technology relevant to the utility trades.
  • Mechanic must provide his own set of every day work tools. Specialty tools will be provided by the District
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
