Experienced Ship Signatures Main Machinery Engineer

General Dynamics Electric Boat•Groton, CT

About The Position

Experienced engineers in the Ship Signatures Department ensure that ship systems, components, and structures are designed and built to meet submarines’ demanding noise requirements. Main Machinery Engineers are responsible for the acoustic design of propulsion-plant main machinery components, including identifying and incorporating noise-control features and performing detailed analyses of the dynamic behavior of machinery components and structures using finite element, boundary element, and statistical energy analysis techniques. The role includes leading projects and mentoring less experienced engineers in machinery silencing. Engineers collaborate with internal Electric Boat component and systems departments, external component vendors, and other disciplines in Design-Build-Sustain teams. They communicate noise requirements to these organizations and develop acoustic calculations and specification requirements, review vendor design submittals, and conduct or participate in component noise testing. The group also develops, implements, and validates numerical modeling methods using finite element analysis and state-of-the-art computer models running on an extensive network of compute nodes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Five or more years of postgraduate engineering experience, or a PhD in a related field of study.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB or another coding language.
  • Proficiency in gear noise or other machinery noise mitigation techniques.
  • An active DoD SECRET clearance, or ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
