About The Position

The Mail Courier I position provides services related to mail operations for the Program Support Center (PSC), component agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), as well as to the broader Federal Government. Involves the sorting and distribution of both incoming and outgoing mail, utilizing both automated and manual processes, and includes use of government vehicle to distribute mail. Operates mail handling equipment including tracking assistants, manages the flow of mail, and handles specialized mail services following USPS regulations. Works within a rotating schedule to perform a full range of responsibilities to maintain efficient mail service operations. Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the required customer clearance for access to systems, facilities, equipment and property.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license – REAL ID.

  • Experience working with Post Office, FedEx and UPS and delivery services preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collects customer mail from the local Post Office using a government provided vehicle.
  • Unloads and prepares incoming mail for delivery to destination offices, sorting them by buildings, floors, and mail stop points.
  • Maintains an up-to-date list of office locations by floor and office symbol.
  • Reads and correctly routes improperly addressed mail.
  • Reroutes and prepares outgoing interoffice mail, utilizing Government-provided transportation when necessary.
  • Handles certified, registered, insured, special delivery, Express mail, and courier shipments, in compliance with USPS regulations.
  • Maintains accurate mail records for postage payments.
  • Maintains accurate driving and vehicle logs. Logs may include fuel logs as well as route destinations.
  • Research improperly addressed mail and ensures timely delivery to destination offices.
  • Attends annual training for handling suspicious mail.
  • Monitors and meter funds, coordinating with the Mail Operations Service Director for approval and replenishment.
  • Performs any training on government vehicle maintenance as required.
  • Ensures that government vehicle maintenance is scheduled and up to date.
  • Represents the service in a professional manner, maintaining honesty, ethics, and a positive attitude.
  • Fosters a professional relationship with coworkers, vendors, supervisors, and clients.
  • Provides clear directions and communicates effectively with employees.
  • Utilizes electronic and communication devices essential for job functions.
