This is a permanent, excepted service position advertised for Enlisted and Warrant Officer applicants. The Machinist (WG-3414-11) fabricates complex and non-routine items requiring intricate steps, precise measurements, unusual angles, or nonstandard applications of standard equipment. The role involves performing machining work to manufacture castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications. The position may require developing and manufacturing specialized tools, working with rare metals or special alloys, or achieving special finishes. The Machinist will interpret and potentially correct incomplete or incorrect dimensions, tolerances, or specifications, which may involve redesigning items. The role requires the use of various measuring and marking tools, advanced shop mathematics, and geometric and trigonometric formulas for setups and computations. The Machinist will determine procedures, tools, machines, and attachments, and may perform machine work requiring new or untried procedures, including special setups and improvising conventional machines. The position involves operating a variety of conventional and/or CNC machine tools such as lathes, boring mills, milling machines, shapers, grinders, and drills. Tool grinding, sharpening, and selection are key responsibilities, as is setting up work using various attachments and fixtures. The Machinist will adjust speeds and feeds, determine appropriate coolants, lubricants, and abrasives, and maintain dimensional accuracy to difficult tolerances. Precision handwork, heat-treating, welding, and soldering may also be required. Other duties as assigned.
