About The Position

The Machinist/Mechanic provides competent and effective mechanic maintenance support to plant operations within the Print Operations Department. This role is crucial for ensuring that work is performed safely, meeting operational needs, executing the maintenance program, and complying with all safety codes. The Machinist/Mechanic will identify, troubleshoot, and repair problems in mechanical systems of production equipment, including running tests, isolating issues, replacing components, determining failure modes, and performing preventive maintenance and upgrades. This position involves a rotating shift between 1st and 2nd shift, with some weekend work required, and reports to the Foreman/Woman at the Chicopee Massachusetts print plant.

Requirements

  • 5-7 years of industrial/commercial mechanic experience.
  • High school degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Some experience preferred.
  • Ability to work under deadlines.
  • Good math, mechanical, organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, stoop & reach.
  • Ability to lift 35-pounds.
  • Welding experience.
  • Must be professional and reliable.
  • Understanding and follow all corporate and plant policies/practices.
  • Keep accurate, useful and timely operational and maintenance records.
  • Work with the production manager to set equipment maintenance priorities.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems and safe machine operation principles.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical systems, including disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and calibration.
  • Act on information from operators to diagnose equipment problems.
  • Clean, lubricate, and adjust parts, equipment, and machinery.
  • Disassemble machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs.
  • Examine parts for defects such as breakage and excessive wear.
  • Observe and test the operation of machinery and equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using voltmeters and other testing devices.
  • Operate newly repaired machinery and equipment to verify the adequacy of repairs.
  • Reassemble equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs.
  • Repair and maintain the operating condition of industrial production machinery and equipment.
  • Repair and replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery and equipment.
  • Study blueprints and manufacturers manuals to determine correct installation and operation of machinery.
  • Cut and weld metal to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts, and assemble new equipment.
  • Test all repairs upon completion.
  • Record parts and materials used, and request new parts and materials.
  • Record repairs and maintenance performed.
  • Perform repairs or modifications when blueprints and manufacturer's specifications are unavailable or incomplete.
  • Use safety and security practices and procedures following established rules and regulations and maintain a safe, clean, and secure work environment.
  • Communicate with management, mechanics, and equipment operators to advise them of any potential mechanical hazards.
  • Execute the maintenance work schedule as provided by the supervisor, making strategic decisions to ensure timely completion.
  • Keep the Foreman/Woman informed of all issues that may affect the operational capability of the equipment.
  • Ensure the shop is maintained in a safe and orderly fashion.
  • Attend meetings and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain close contact with the Foreman/Woman, maintenance crew, production supervisors, and equipment operators.
  • Keep the maintenance supervisor and manager informed of all abnormal or critical situations and seek advice on matters outside of their knowledge or authority.
  • Perform other tasks and special assignments as requested by management.
