About The Position

The Machinist Lead will be responsible for examining work orders and part drawings to determine machining requirements, dimensional specifications, setups, and operating parameters. This role involves selecting and installing tooling, mounting workpieces, and proofreading CNC programs. The lead will monitor machine performance, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure continuity between shifts. Additionally, the position may require performing flame cutting or arc welding operations, cross-training, and training junior machinists. The role also includes updating production boards and communicating with other departments to establish production priorities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in a general machine shop
  • Ability to operate CNC lathes, mills, and drill presses
  • Strong understanding of mechanics, basic metallurgy, tolerances, tools, mathematics, layout, and machining procedures
  • Floor-level programming experience and a basic understanding of Mastercam
  • Experience with Mazak Matrix/Mazatrol controls
  • Proficiency using tape measures, scales, micrometers, and calipers
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Knowledge of tooling geometry, replacement, and sharpening practices
  • Ability to set up and machine complex parts independently
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for repairs involving mating fits, bearing fits, clearances, and runout
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Computer skills, including time tracking and program manipulation

Responsibilities

  • Examine work orders and part drawings to determine machining requirements, dimensional specifications, setups, and operating parameters
  • Select and install tooling in tool posts, turrets, indexing heads, or automatic tool-change magazines following program printouts
  • Mount workpieces in chucks, fixtures, between centers, or onto faceplates
  • Proofread CNC programs to verify dimensions, feed rates, and machining speeds
  • Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to feeds and speeds
  • Maintain equipment by completing preventive maintenance, following manufacturer instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and coordinating repairs as needed
  • Ensure continuity between shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and ongoing needs
  • Perform flame cutting or arc welding operations when required
  • Demonstrate willingness to cross-train and perform additional job tasks beyond the primary assignment
  • Train and assist Machinist I and II employees
  • Update production boards and communicate with Leads and Managers from other departments to establish production priorities
