About The Position

The Machinist Intern will participate in the Borger Refinery Craft Student Internship Program which provides opportunities for career success through hands-on learning experiences. Students apply subject matter knowledge learned in a certificate or associate program to the workplace and develop technical and interpersonal skills in the workplace. It is important for student interns to participate as contributing and active members of their craft or operation's team. Interns are expected to effectively communicate with all levels of the team and to ask questions that facilitate learning while respecting the professional demands and experience of their co-workers. The anticipated internship start date in Summer 2026. Interns will continue to work during the Fall and Spring semesters and will work with their supervisor to set a part time work schedule around their classes and other educational obligations. This position requires the successful completion of an online assessment. Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Valid driver’s license
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1 or more years of experience operating lathes and milling equipment
  • 1 or more years of experience using precision measuring devices and reading blueprints
  • 1 or more years of experience working with manual machining
  • Willing and able to perform/comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation: Climb up to 250 feet in height
  • Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Work in enclosed/confined spaces, such as tanks and silos
  • Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
  • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and high temperature
  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
  • Perform firefighting duties
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear, and eye protection)
  • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
  • Able to read English at a level to understand technical procedures, documents, and materials
  • Learn computer software associated with process operations

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Machining Technology Associate’s or Bachelor's Degree Program or equivalent at a post-secondary educational institution
  • Technical certification for Machinist (or higher) by date of hire strongly preferred
  • Associate’s Degree in Machining Technology or any relevant certificate
  • 2 or more years of military experience related to metal working
  • 3 or more years of direct experience working in a refinery and/or chemical industry
  • Experience with SAP’s Maintenance Module or other ERP Maintenance modules
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong oral/written communication skills and the ability to interact and work in a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Accepts ownership, is accountable, and delivers on commitment

Responsibilities

  • Shadow and support experienced employees while effectively following all safety, health, environmental, maintenance, and operation practices and procedures
  • Perform manual machining using lathe, milling machine, etc.
  • Learn about health, safety and environmental hazards
  • Witness the work authorization permit system
  • Witness energy isolation (e.g. Lock, Tag & Try)
  • Learn how to recognize and report incidents and near-misses
  • Provide inspection, testing, and documentation of safety systems to meet OSHA regulations
  • Assist with pre-startup safety reviews and new project technical reviews
  • Communicate well with all organizational levels and present information / ideas in an articulate and organized way
