About The Position

The Aerojet Rocketdyne Segment of L3Harris is seeking a Machinist B to work at our Orange, VA location. Our site near Culpeper, VA , in beautiful, rural Orange County (1.5 hours from Washington, DC) is growing! This site is our center of excellence for Solid Rocket Motor Propulsion and Energetics development as well as high-complexity production programs. Position sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, precision grinders, etc. to make parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of 4 years of prior machinist experience or 2 years post Secondary/Associates Degree with 0-2 years of prior machinist experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a manual machinist on a conventional lathe and CNC machining in an industrial / manufacturing environment.
  • A trade school certification or state-licensed Journeyman Machinist certification is strongly desired.
  • Manual machining experience is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of setting up the operation of milling machines and lathes.
  • Working knowledge of engineering drawings, blueprints, production plans and/or work instructions.
  • Working knowledge performing in-process inspection of finished parts utilizing appropriate inspection and gaging equipment.
  • Knowledge of industry applicable laws, codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Knowledge of machine tools and equipment, machine shop procedures and practices, principals and properties.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematic principles to solve problems.
  • The ability to work in a team environment and relate to all levels of employees.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determines sequence of operations, number of cuts required and method of setup and arrangement; works with a variety of machinist’s hand tools and precision measuring instruments; makes shop computations; and fits and puts together precision parts and determines material, parts and equipment required.
  • Fabricates piece parts per work instructions, drawings and specifications through the use of required machine tools.
  • Inspects piece parts per work instruction and drawing requirements.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Uses, adjusts, cleans and stores the tools, machinery and equipment used.
  • Keeps records and reports of the use of equipment.
