This position interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determines the sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup and arrangement. The machinist works with a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments, makes shop computations, and fits and puts together precision parts. They determine the material, parts, and equipment required. The role involves fabricating piece parts per work instructions, drawings, and specifications using required machine tools, and inspecting these parts. The machinist will set up and operate machine tools, run machine shop equipment such as lathes, CNC, milling machines, and precision grinders to make parts to exacting tolerances and dimensions. They will also use, adjust, clean, and store tools, machinery, and equipment, and keep records and reports of equipment usage. The ability to obtain a US security clearance is also required.
