This position sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, precision grinders, etc. to make parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions. The role involves interpreting blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determining the sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup and arrangement. The machinist will work with a variety of machinist’s hand tools and precision measuring instruments, make shop computations, and fit and put together precision parts. They will also determine material, parts, and equipment required. The position fabricates piece parts per work instructions, drawings, and specifications using required machine tools, and inspects piece parts per work instruction and drawing requirements. The machinist will set up and operate machine tools, use, adjust, clean, and store tools, machinery, and equipment, and keep records and reports of equipment usage. The ability to obtain a US security clearance is also required.
