About The Position

The Machine Operator will be responsible for preparing materials for molding, welding, machining, or forging. This role involves setting up and operating various machines such as lathes, millers, grinders, presses, and drills. The operator will also tend to furnace machines for melting materials and ensure proper setup and operation of machines that cut or slice materials. Key aspects of the role include positioning and securing stock material, reading blueprints and job orders, observing machine operations for defects, and performing routine maintenance like changing accessories. The operator will also be responsible for selecting and managing coolants and lubricants, removing burrs and sharp edges from workpieces, and recording operational data. Additionally, the role requires checking and inspecting work for conformity to specifications using precision measuring instruments, reading and understanding work orders and schematics, and recognizing and requesting replacements for discrepant materials.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED preferred or Equivalent years of experience in a related role or manufacturing environment.
  • Must put personal and team safety first.
  • Must be able to work a 40 hour week with up to 20 hours overtime if needed to meet operational needs.
  • Flexibility in work hours to meet operational shift changes and needs.
  • Able to work weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare materials for molding, welding, machining, or forging.
  • Set up and operate machines, such as lathes, millers, grinders, presses, drills, or auxiliary machines.
  • Set up, operate, or tend machines that cut or slice bit materials.
  • Set up, operate, or tend furnace machines to melt materials for molds and forms.
  • Position, adjust, and secure stock material or workpieces against stops or in chucks, fixtures, or automatic feeding mechanisms, manually or using hoists.
  • Read blueprints or job orders to determine product specifications and tooling instructions and to plan operational sequences.
  • Observe machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunctions, adjusting machines as necessary.
  • Change worn machine accessories, such as cutting tools or brushes, using hand tools.
  • Set machine stops or guides to specified lengths as indicated by scales, rules, or templates.
  • Select the proper coolants and lubricants and start their flow.
  • Remove burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpieces, using files, hand grinders, wire brushes, or power tools.
  • Start machines and turn handwheels or valves to engage feeding, cooling, and lubricating mechanisms.
  • Move controls or mount gears, cams, or templates in machines to set feed rates and cutting speeds, depths, and angles.
  • Record operational data, such as pressure readings, lengths of strokes, feed rates, or speeds.
  • Extract or lift jammed pieces from machines.
  • Measure and mark reference points and cutting lines on workpieces, using traced templates, compasses, and rules.
  • Check and inspect work for conformity to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
  • Read, interpret and understand work orders and schematics.
  • Recognize discrepant materials and request replacements in accordance with standard operating procedures.
