Sets up and operates metal fabricating machines such as brakes, shears and presses, to cut, bend, straighten, and form metal plates, sheets, and structural shapes. This role involves reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering specifications, and shop orders to determine machine setup, production methods, and sequence of operation. The operator will select, position, and secure tooling and fixtures, and position and clamp stops, guides, and turntables. Adjustments to controls for factors like pressure, depth of ram stroke, and machine speed are necessary. The position requires locating and marking bending or cutting lines, positioning workpieces, and operating the machine while monitoring its performance for adjustments or multiple passes. Inspection and measurement of work, labeling parts, and documenting deviations are also key duties. The role mandates wearing all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and reporting work-related injuries, near misses, and unsafe conditions. Training new or existing employees may also be required.
