Machine Learning Researcher

Archetype AI•San Mateo, CA

About The Position

Archetype AI is building multimodal foundation models for the physical world, combining time-series and sensor data with language, vision, audio, and other real-world signals. These models aim to understand complex systems, reason over long horizons, and support tasks in industrial and physical environments. The Machine Learning Researcher will help build these systems end to end, from problem formulation and experimental design through model development, evaluation, and deployment. The role is intended for a self-directed, researcher-oriented candidate who can independently conduct rigorous scientific work and is interested in multimodal intelligence grounded in physical signals. The position offers the opportunity to shape foundation models that integrate real-world signals and dynamics, with both research and practical deployment impact.

Requirements

  • Be self-directed and comfortable operating in ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Be able to independently perform strong scientific work, including forming hypotheses, designing experiments, and drawing sound conclusions.
  • Have experience with end-to-end modeling, including data, modeling, and evaluation.
  • Have experience with productionization or deployment of machine learning models.
  • Have strong technical judgment and experimental rigor.

Nice To Haves

  • Multimodal experience.

Responsibilities

  • Build and improve multimodal foundation models incorporating time-series and sensor data alongside language, vision, audio, and related modalities.
  • Drive research and modeling efforts from problem definition through experimentation and evaluation.
  • Own modeling work across data, modeling, and evaluation.
  • Advance model architectures and training strategies for physical-world understanding and long-context reasoning.
  • Scale research experiments and modeling advances into production models for diverse use cases in complex industrial scenarios.
  • Contribute to research directions with potential for publication.
