Machine Learning Research Intern - 2027
About The Position
The Machine Learning Department invites applications for winter, summer, and fall 2027 internships. Interns conduct research and development of novel machine learning algorithms, with applications in multimodal large language models, AI for Science, real-time awareness, and healthcare. Research areas range from theoretical machine learning and new algorithms to computer vision for real-time awareness and industrial digital twins, natural language understanding, and AI for Science. Ongoing projects include multimodal LLMs, agentic AI, self-improving AI, AI safety and efficiency, physics-informed machine learning, physical AI, and LLM theory. Research commonly results in high-quality publications, and application projects emphasize solving real-world problems, with research results often transferred into industry products. The internship usually lasts three months, with flexible exact dates. NEC Laboratories America is the US-based research center in NEC Corporation’s global network of corporate research laboratories, with locations in Princeton, New Jersey, and San Jose, California. Its research areas include Data Science & Systems Research, Integrated Systems, Machine Learning, Media Analytics, and Optical Networking & Sensing. Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a PhD or MSc program in computer science, statistics, electrical engineering, computational biology, or an equivalent field.
- Research experience in machine learning.
- Strong computational background.
- Strong programming and scripting skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research and development of novel machine learning algorithms.
- Work on research projects in areas such as multimodal LLMs, AI for Science, real-time awareness, healthcare, and related machine learning topics.
- Contribute to research intended for high-quality publication and, where applicable, real-world applications and industry products.
