Machine Learning Engineer, Scenes

Waymo•San Francisco, CA
•$175,000 - $215,000

About The Position

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company focused on building the Waymo Driver to improve access to mobility and help reduce traffic crashes. The Driver powers Waymo’s autonomous ride-hail service and can be used across vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Driver Refinement and Validation (DRV) team refines the ML Driver’s performance in complex real-world contexts and problem areas, aiming to ensure it produces safe, compliant, comfortable, and useful plans. As a Machine Learning Engineer on DRV, you will connect machine learning advances with real-world vehicle performance by engineering validation and onboard systems that help the autonomous vehicle execute intelligent, predictable maneuvers. You will develop ML-powered systems, adapt and benchmark generative models for autonomous-driving tasks, bring ML into production through scalable and tested code, and collaborate with engineers and product managers to deliver safe, smooth vehicle behavior. The role is full-time. The expected base salary range is $175,000–$215,000 USD; actual pay depends on job-related factors and location. Employees may also participate in a discretionary annual bonus program and equity incentive plan, and are eligible for the company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Hands-on experience deploying, evaluating, and maintaining ML-based systems in real-world production environments.
  • Proficient programming skills in Python and/or C++, with strong analytical and debugging abilities.
  • Expertise with modern deep learning frameworks, such as JAX or PyTorch.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in deep learning, reinforcement learning, and ML systems.
  • Prior industry experience, such as internships, in applied machine learning or software development.
  • Publications in top-tier conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICRA, IROS, RSS, CoRL, ACL, or EMNLP.
  • Domain expertise in motion planning, prediction, or related robotics problems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop next-generation, ML-powered systems that enhance the capabilities of the ML Driver and accelerate the scaling of Waymo’s business.
  • Fine-tune, adapt, and benchmark state-of-the-art generative models to improve autonomous vehicle perception, motion prediction, and trajectory planning.
  • Write high-quality, scalable, and thoroughly tested code to bring cutting-edge machine learning into production.
  • Partner with engineers and product managers to deliver safe and smooth autonomous vehicle behaviors.
  • Engineer validation and onboard systems that help the autonomous vehicle reliably execute intelligent and predictable maneuvers.

Benefits

  • Discretionary annual bonus program.
  • Equity incentive plan.
  • Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
