Machine Learning Engineer, Scenes

Waymo•Mountain View, CA
•$175,000 - $215,000

About The Position

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company focused on building the Waymo Driver, which powers its fully autonomous ride-hail service and can be applied to other vehicle platforms and product use cases. Driver Refinement and Validation (DRV) refines the ML Driver’s performance in complex real-world contexts and works to ensure it produces safe, compliant, comfortable, and useful plans. In this role, you will help bridge machine learning and real-world vehicle performance by engineering systems that help autonomous vehicles execute intelligent and predictable maneuvers. You will develop ML-powered systems, adapt and benchmark generative models for autonomous driving tasks, and bring machine learning into production through scalable, tested code. You will work with engineers and product managers to deliver safe and smooth autonomous vehicle behaviors.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Hands-on experience deploying, evaluating, and maintaining ML-based systems in real-world production environments.
  • Proficient programming skills in Python and/or C++, with strong analytical and debugging abilities.
  • Expertise with modern deep learning frameworks, such as JAX or PyTorch.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in deep learning, reinforcement learning, and ML systems.
  • Prior industry experience, such as internships, in applied ML or software development.
  • Publications in top-tier conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICRA, IROS, RSS, CoRL, ACL, or EMNLP.
  • Domain expertise in motion planning, prediction, or related robotics problems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop next-generation, ML-powered systems that enhance the capabilities of the ML driver and accelerate the scaling of Waymo’s business.
  • Fine-tune, adapt, and benchmark state-of-the-art generative models to improve autonomous vehicle perception, motion prediction, and trajectory planning.
  • Write high-quality, scalable, and thoroughly tested code to bring cutting-edge ML into production.
  • Partner with engineers and product managers to deliver safe and smooth autonomous vehicle behaviors.

Benefits

  • Discretionary annual bonus program, subject to eligibility requirements.
  • Equity incentive plan, subject to eligibility requirements.
  • Company benefits program, described as generous and subject to eligibility requirements.
