About The Position

Join Apple’s Mac product design group to help develop upcoming Mac hardware. As a Product Design Intern, you will gain hands-on experience taking hardware designs from concept to reality, supporting design, engineering, prototyping, and validation in laboratory and factory environments. The role includes mechanical design, prototype development and testing, electro-mechanical integration, engineering data analysis, and optimization for high-volume manufacturing. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical specifications, test results, and design updates to internal teams and external vendors. The work may include up to 20% travel.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Product Design, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in verbal and written communication in both English and Chinese.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software; Siemens NX is preferred.
  • Hands-on prototyping experience using 3D printers, CNC mills, lathes, or other fabrication methods.
  • Knowledge of materials science fundamentals, including plastics, metals, adhesives, glass, ceramics, composites, and coatings.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing and tolerancing, including DFM, DFA, statistical tolerance analysis, and GD&T.
  • Understanding of engineering analysis, including FEA theory, general mechanical principles, and statistical tools.
  • Familiarity with electro-mechanical integration, particularly packaging batteries and wireless antennas into mechanical enclosures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and curiosity about how things work.
  • Proactive and adaptable, with initiative to drive tasks forward and flexibility to adjust as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tests and project requests simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment.

Responsibilities

  • Create 3D models and 2D drawings for components, mechanisms, and electro-mechanical integrations, including batteries, antennas, PCBs, and interconnections.
  • Generate design concepts, build prototypes, and perform mechanical, tolerance, and failure analyses to evaluate designs.
  • Support design, engineering, prototyping, and validation activities in laboratory and factory environments.
  • Perform tolerance analysis to ensure precise fit and assembly.
  • Collect engineering data and use statistical or AI-driven tools to analyze results and inform design decisions.
  • Optimize component designs for high-volume manufacturing using DFM/DFA principles for injection molding, sheet metal, and CNC machining.
  • Collaborate with Hardware, Program Management, Industrial Design, Operations, Manufacturing, and Reliability teams.
  • Support factory builds and perform root-cause and failure analysis; travel may be required up to 20%.
  • Communicate technical specifications, test results, and design updates to internal teams and external vendors.
