Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent or 2 years of appropriate work experience.
  • American Association of Medical Assistants - Certified Medical Assistant OR National Healthcareer Association - Certified Clinical Medical Assistant
  • Certified Medical Assistant - NPCE
  • American Heart Association - Basic Life Support Health Care Provider.
  • Clinical skills: vital signs, documentation, specimen labeling and transport, medication administration, computer skills.
  • Communication and Guest Relations Skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for office visits by collecting vital signs, pain rating, allergies, and reason for visit.
  • Assess each patient for Abuse, Fall Risk, Functional Assessment, and Advance Directives.
  • Record patient information including allergies, vital signs, reason for visit, current medications, social and past medical history, Abuse, Fall Risk, Functional Assessment, and Advance Directives in the patient's medical record.
  • Obtain patient tests prior to or after physician visits.
  • Discuss the plan of care with the physician before, during, and following patient visits.
  • Administer treatments and document/submit charges as directed by the physician.
  • Administer prescribed medications and/or vaccines under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Consider patient growth and development, using proper technique for all age groups.
  • Clean and reorganize exam rooms after each visit.
  • Communicate with patients, pharmacies, hospitals, and other medical personnel.
  • Relay information between patients and physicians regarding labs/test results, medications, and appointments.
  • Communicate with pharmacies regarding patient medication refills and new prescriptions.
  • Record all communication in the patient record.
  • Sort and distribute correspondence, test results, and scan them into the patient medical record after physician review.
  • Prepare patients and rooms for procedures performed in the office.
  • Provide privacy and instruction to patients pre and post-procedure.
  • Obtain specimens, complete appropriate paperwork, and deliver specimens to the designated location.
  • Apply supportive devices or bandages as ordered by the physician and document appropriately.
  • Stock treatment rooms and keep supplies organized, ensuring adequate supply levels.
  • Monitor equipment and surgical instruments, package and label instruments for sterilization, and ensure used instruments are cleaned daily.
  • Inspect equipment for proper operation and report any necessary repairs.
  • Update Recommendations (health maintenance) in the patient's medical record.
  • Check Quality Assurance logs and Refrigerator logs daily.
  • Participate in clinic preparation by gathering appropriate clinical documentation for provider review.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all equipment including computers, printers, scanners, and fax machines.
  • Obtain medical records from outside facilities when needed.
  • Scan outside correspondence into the electronic medical record.
  • Answer the telephone and route calls promptly.
  • Perform specialty-specific testing and/or minor procedures under direct supervision.
  • Monitor patients for changes in condition, including blood pressure, heart rate, rhythm, and signs/symptoms, and report to the physician when immediate attention is required.
