About The Position

This is a long-term substitute position for a Chinese Lower School Teacher needed to cover a temporary absence during the first semester. The teacher will be responsible for implementing Chinese target-language lesson plans and learning objectives provided by the lead Chinese teacher, working closely with the Lower School homeroom co-teacher. The role requires maintaining a safe, orderly, and culturally rich classroom environment, fostering a supportive language-learning atmosphere, and ensuring the continuity of student instruction in Chinese.

Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of 60 college credit hours.
  • High-intermediate to native-level proficiency in spoken and written Chinese (Simplified or Traditional, depending on school curriculum), as well as strong English communication skills.
  • Excellent Chinese and English verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with students, school staff, and parents.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess patience and a passion for working with children of various ages and abilities.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to new teaching environments, grade levels, lesson plans, and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote an inclusive school culture.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, and for the majority of the work day.
  • May be required to lift up to 25lbs.
  • Must successfully maintain an acceptable Level II criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mandarin, Chinese Linguistics, Education, or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides Chinese classroom instruction to students as outlined in lesson plans.
  • Creates a classroom that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students that encourages target-language risk-taking, fosters enthusiasm for Chinese acquisition, and celebrates cultural appreciation.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
  • Supervises students in a variety of settings, such as classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, during carline, at recess, and during school assemblies/events.
  • Maintains established routine of the school and classroom procedures in which assigned.
  • Maintains a professional appearance as an example to students.
  • Remains at school the entire school day, unless otherwise instructed to leave by Division Head.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains reasonable rules of conduct that encourage self-discipline and responsibility.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and times designated.
  • Completes all required onboarding and technology training.
  • Adheres to all school regulations, policies, and ethical guidelines at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
