About The Position

This is a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position within Atrium Health's Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine department in Waxhaw. The role involves preparing patients for examinations, performing laboratory procedures, assisting providers with procedures, administering medications, providing patient education, and managing patient care documentation. The LPN will also perform advanced clinical tasks, maintain exam rooms and equipment, and participate in quality improvement initiatives. A strong understanding of age-specific patient care is required.

Requirements

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Practical Nursing.
  • No experience required.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs over the head.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs of force.
  • Must be able to perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
  • Will be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluid hazards.
  • Will be required to wear protective clothing and equipment.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with ability to use fine-hand manipulation skills.
  • Operates all equipment essential to perform the job.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and rooms patients by obtaining vital signs and documenting health information.
  • Performs laboratory procedures using aseptic technique and infection control guidelines.
  • Assists physicians/providers with procedures and surgeries.
  • Administers medications under physician/provider orders.
  • Initiates, maintains, and discontinues IV therapy with limitations, administering selected fluids.
  • Provides basic patient education on tasks, skills, treatment, and self-care.
  • Follows through with procedure/test requests, prescription refills, appointments, and referrals.
  • Refers questions to registered nurses and physicians/providers per scope of practice and relays information back to patients.
  • Communicates with physicians and other healthcare team members.
  • Documents and communicates accurate and timely patient information.
  • Performs advanced clinical tasks such as suture/staple removal, catheterization, audiograms, laboratory procedures, EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor application, casting, and complex wound care.
  • Organizes and prepares exam rooms, lab, and work areas, including cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment.
  • Performs patient positioning and transporting duties requiring lifting and pushing/pulling.
  • Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of clinic equipment.
  • Participates in patient-centered initiatives, care management, and performance/quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills for age-appropriate patient care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles and ability to assess patient status based on age-specific needs.
