About The Position

The Behavioral Health LPN provides direct behavioral health and general nursing care to an incarcerated patient population, within LPN scope of practice and under the direction of RNs and psychiatric providers. This role supports medication administration, behavioral health monitoring, and documentation, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team and custody staff in a secure setting.

Requirements

  • Active, unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the State of New Mexico.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Knowledge of medication administration and behavioral characteristics of mentally ill patients.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills; ability to work independently in a secure environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Behavioral health, psychiatric, or correctional nursing experience preferred.
  • Prior correctional behavioral health experience and familiarity with NCCHC standards.
  • Experience with crisis intervention and suicide prevention protocols.
  • Experience supporting MAT/MOUD programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care and support to behavioral health patients under the direction of RNs and providers.
  • Administer medications, including psychotropic medications, safely and accurately per medication administration policies.
  • Monitor patients for medication response, side effects, and behavioral changes and report findings to the RN or provider.
  • Assist with behavioral health rounds, sick call, and ongoing monitoring within LPN scope of practice.
  • Support suicide prevention, crisis intervention, and restrictive-housing monitoring under RN/provider direction.
  • Assist in responding to medical and behavioral health emergencies within scope of practice.
  • Collaborate with custody and clinical staff to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Document all patient care activities accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
  • Communicate pertinent patient information to RNs, providers, and behavioral health staff while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Support continuity of care and coordination with medical, MAT, and case management teams.
  • Follow infection control, safety, and emergency response protocols.
  • Comply with regulations associated with medication handling and dispensing.
  • Adhere to NCCHC, NMAC, facility policies, and applicable laws and regulations.
