About The Position

This role combines the responsibilities of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and a Medical Assistant (MA) at the Sherwood Med Clinic. The LPN, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician, functions as a vital member of the healthcare team, utilizing the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive care. The MA, under the direction of a healthcare provider, is responsible for patient care that promotes safety and well-being, including performing preliminary physical tests and assisting with patient examinations. Both roles are considered safety-sensitive positions within EngageMED, which emphasizes values of Integrity, Innovation, Service, and Respect (or Reverence, Integrity, Compassion, and Excellence for MAs), focusing on high-quality care, teamwork, continuous improvement, and wise resource utilization.

Requirements

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Medical Assistant (MA) certification/licensure.
Knowledge of basic nursing processes.
Understanding of health care technology, equipment, and supplies.
Familiarity with state law on nursing care, nurse practice guidelines, and clinic policies and procedures.
Ability to effectively communicate to staff and patients.
Demonstrate sound judgment and composure with the ability to take appropriate action in questionable or emergency situations.
Maintain a positive, caring attitude towards patients.
Possess a strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to common inquiries or complaints from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, Internet navigation, database management, desktop publishing, spreadsheet, and graphic presentation packages.
Ability to perform EKGs, draw blood and administer injections (MA specific).
Demonstrated knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures (MA specific).
Thorough knowledge of the meaning and use of medical terminology and abbreviations (MA specific).
Good computer skills using a medical management application (MA specific).

Responsibilities

Performs basic nursing care to patients by following established standards and procedures.
Collects patient data such as vital signs; notes how the patient looks and acts, or responds to stimuli, and reports this information accordingly.
Prepares and administers injections, performs routine tests, treats wounds, and changes bandages.
Prepares patient records and files using established medical record forms/automated systems and documentation practices.
Administers certain prescribed medications, and monitors and documents treatment progress and patient response.
Participates in the implementation and evaluation of patient care based on practice guidelines, standards of care, and federal/state laws and regulations.
Conveys information to patients and families about health status, health maintenance, and management of acute and chronic conditions.
Participates in teams to improve patient care processes and outcomes.
Accurately performs preliminary physical tests such as: measures blood pressure, records weight, temperature, pulse and respirations and other measures as directed by established clinical protocols.
Greets and prepares patients for the health care provider.
Obtains and records vital signs including but not limited to, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, drug allergies, and current medications and presenting problem.
May be required to draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
Administers ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topically, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or inhalant administration.
May perform routine tests including but not limited to EKGs.
Schedules patients for diagnostic testing and follows up to ensure completion of testing.
Communicates with patient regarding test results and plan of care by phone or mail as directed by physician.
Prepares, cleans and sterilizes instruments and maintains equipment; keeps patient exam rooms stocked, clean and orderly; disposes of contaminated items according to protocol.
Documents patient plan(s) of care, tests and examination results in the medical record as directed by the provider.
Escalates non-routine issues, questions and/or concerns to the practice manager or healthcare provider(s).
Ensures safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required.
Provides for patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights.
Performs other duties as assigned.
