Requirements

  • Currently licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.
  • HS Diploma or GED required

Responsibilities

  • The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible and accountable for the delivery of nursing care under the direction of an RN.
  • She/he implements the Nursing Service standards of care and practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served and the areas of clinical practice.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic milieu by fostering an awareness of the Behavioral Health Services patient population.
  • Communicate respect by honoring personal space and using a non-threatening/non-challenging/ non-judgmental approach.
  • Demonstrates competence in nursing care practices and performs technical skills appropriate to the clinical area and needs of the patient population served.
  • Follows the established Infection Control Policy.
  • Communicates therapeutically during every patient interaction/encounter.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and sensitivity to patient's rights.
  • Maintains dignity and confidentiality of the patient and follows the Patient Identification Policy.
  • Cooperates with other health care disciplines in the coordination of patient care activities.
  • Be an active participant in building/ensuring team spirit by collaborating and maintaining effective and timely communication with the members of the interdisciplinary team and with personnel from other departments.
  • Delegates tasks appropriately and is accountable for her/his practice within the scope of the LPN role.
  • Adheres to OASAS and other regulatory guidelines.
  • Adheres to the unit's standards of care and practice.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff, applies appropriate precautions and protocols.
  • Participates in the orientation of personnel to the unit.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings
  • Utilizes opportunities for clinical learning and participates in continuing education to meet established requirements and for own career development.
  • Follows St. John’s Riverside Hospital attendance policy.
  • Uses two patient identifiers to ensure correct patient.
  • Checks for alertness/ sedation prior to dosing patient.
  • Verifies MD written order to computer order for dosing / pick up accuracy.
  • Maintaining daily narcotic count to ensure accuracy of the safe.
  • Updates lighthouse (central registry) as needed to ensure dosing accuracy.
  • Methadone medication bottles when empty should be purged and rinsed prior to discarding.
  • When empty takeout bottles are returned, name must be crossed off with black permanent marker.
