About The Position

This is a full-time LPN position within the Family Medicine department at Scotland Memorial Hospital. The role involves direct patient care, including taking vital signs, obtaining patient history, collecting specimens, administering injections, assisting with procedures, and patient education. The LPN will also be responsible for maintaining exam rooms, managing supplies, preparing lab specimens for transport, and ensuring accurate charting. The position requires adherence to CLIA waivered tests and age-specific competency.

Responsibilities

  • Bring patients to the nursing station within fifteen minutes of their scheduled appointment, taking vital signs (ht, wt, bp, p, resp, and temp) error-free, and recording them in the proper place within the patient chart.
  • Check chart for allergies and place an allergy sticker on the front of the chart.
  • Obtain a brief patient history and record pertinent information in the patient record.
  • Read chart and pass on pertinent information to clinician (e.g., lab, x-ray results).
  • Obtain laboratory specimens as ordered in previous office notes (where applicable) after a brief history is recorded, and perform necessary testing prior to the PA/FNP/MD seeing the patient.
  • Escort the patient to the exam room and prepare the patient for the PA/FNP/MD as exam rooms become available, having the patient undress appropriately for the exam (placing a clean gown on exam table when necessary).
  • Provide privacy for the patient before and during exam.
  • Obtain lab specimens, perform blood draws, give injections (according to standard procedures and practices); or perform procedures as ordered by the PA/FNP/MD, recording the said results into the patient chart in the correct place, error-free.
  • Return chart to the front desk.
  • Identify emergency situations and notify the PA/FNP/MD immediately.
  • Assist PA/FNP/MD in emergencies, laceration repairs, or minor surgery, as directed.
  • Receive and screen all incoming calls (including emergency calls) dealing with medically related inquiries immediately and courteously, providing the information requested, or directing the call to the medical provider for response.
  • Make referral appointments for patients as directed, keeping in mind the urgency of the situation, and giving clear, concise information to the referral office.
  • Record all referrals for inclusion in the monthly report to Administration.
  • After making the referral to patients, give clear, concise, adequate information as to the date, time, location, and preparation required.
  • Check emergency medical supplies according to policy to ensure dates have not expired.
  • Provide medical education to patients as directed by the PA/FNP/MD (i.e., review medication with patients and inform the providers of any medications that require refill prescriptions).
  • Assist Patient Service Specialist with appropriate scheduling for visit.
  • Encourage use of patient portal.
  • Check inventory weekly, keep inventory stocked, and rotate items as new inventory items come to the office.
  • Keep exam rooms neat and stocked with supplies.
  • Ensure that exam rooms are neat before clinic opening and before a new patient is taken to the room.
  • Check drug sample area neat.
  • Prepare laboratory specimens collected daily for hospital courier pick-up by 3:00pm, or as otherwise applicable to individual center.
  • File laboratory results and patient notes received form outside sources daily, as charts are available, ensuring that the PA/FNP/MD has reviewed, initialed, and dated them.
  • Report any STD or communicable disease to HD according to policy.
  • Follow-up with patients who have abnormal lab findings.
  • Maintain proficiency in all procedures performed at the clinic, including EKGs and lab procedures.
  • Perform CLIA waivered tests.
  • Staff members will have knowledge of human growth and development through the life span of the patient and have the ability to meet the needs of and provide the care of these patients.
