About The Position

Cape Fear Academy (CFA) is seeking a Full Time Lower School Music Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. CFA is a PK3-12 independent school in Wilmington, NC, dedicated to discovering and developing individual potential and preparing students for success in college and life. Requirements

  • Knowledge of music pedagogy.
  • Ability to play and teach a variety of classroom instruments.
  • Basic piano knowledge.
  • Drama experience.
  • Ability to plan and direct mid-to-large-scale performances.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, in Music Education or closely related degree.
  • Three or more years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience may be considered in place of the above requirements.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach effective lessons based on best practices and the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Music in grades 2-5.
  • Teach music fundamentals, music appreciation, and note reading.
  • Introduce students to different styles, composers, and periods of music through various activities.
  • Use a variety of instruments and teaching tools on all grade levels.
  • Incorporate movement and dance into lessons.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to implement cross-disciplinary learning opportunities.
  • Consistently set a positive and supportive tone in the classroom, with fellow faculty members, and in the larger CFA community.
  • Model integrity, respect, and accountability in daily behaviors and expect the same of students.
  • Successfully manage and, when necessary, correct student behavior in a fair, consistent, and predictable manner.
  • Demonstrate sustained passion for and growth in your profession by regularly engaging in professional development.
  • Communicate with parents as necessary.
  • Co-Direct the Lower School Musical.
  • Direct Grandparents Day and Halloween Sing-Along.
  • Support grade-level presentations as assigned.
  • Coordinate and organize all aspects of talent shows each school year.
  • Grade each student on effort and content for three grading periods (trimesters) on electronic report cards.
  • Keep Director informed of major behavior, social, or emotional problems of students.
  • Actively collaborate with colleagues on performances including integration and scheduling.
  • Carry out any other tasks and duties as assigned.
