About The Position

Michigan Millers Mutual Insurance Company is seeking a Loss Control Consultant to join their team. This role involves completing loss control surveys, primarily in Michigan, and reporting on risks, exposures, and controls. The consultant will also develop service plans and provide consulting services for larger accounts in their area. This is a remote, work-from-home position, with periodic overnight stays and occasional travel to their offices in Lansing, Michigan and Edina, Minnesota.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and related business or technical work experience in occupational health and safety.
  • Proficient use of various core systems, office and computer equipment, and software packages.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% overnight, which may include travel by automobile and commercial airline.
  • Ability to drive long distances without interruption, including four hours or more.
  • Ability to safely access and navigate customer facilities, including occasional use of stairs, ladders, and elevated work areas.
  • Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor customer environments, including construction sites, areas near roadways, and manufacturing facilities, with exposure to varying weather conditions and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and perform the physical demands of the position throughout the workday, including prolonged walking, standing, climbing, and navigating a variety of customer work environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Intermediate knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, and DOT codes and standards.
  • Experience applying loss control practices, processes, and evaluation tools to assess business operations and exposures.
  • Strong ability to build effective relationships with underwriters, agents, and insureds.
  • Continuing education, including currently possessing one or more of the following certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Occupational Health & Safety Technician (OHST), or Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST).

Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains strong underwriter and agency relationships.
  • Manages loss control assignments to achieve risk improvement and ongoing account service, with a focus on reducing line-of-business loss trends and improving safety programs.
  • Uses established loss control practices, processes, and procedures to analyze the operations and exposures of various types of risks.
  • Assesses risk attitudes related to uncontrolled exposures on new and existing business and identifies risk improvement opportunities through recommendations and safety program enhancements.
  • Applies intermediate knowledge of recognized codes and standards, including OSHA, NFPA, and DOT standards, in loss control survey work.
  • Uses available research tools to prepare for loss control surveys across a variety of businesses.
  • Objectively evaluates lines of business using established loss control evaluation tools.
  • Makes decisions guided by loss control considerations, policies, and objectives, including complex or impactful decisions, and provides effective risk evaluations to support underwriting decision-making.
  • Uses intermediate knowledge, experience, and creative resources to identify a range of solutions and clearly articulate them to others.
  • Understands and effectively communicates relationships between problem components.
  • Consistently acts according to customer experience standards, including responding quickly, maintaining a positive attitude, building rapport, demonstrating empathy, managing customer expectations, using the proper communication channel, and taking ownership to ensure customer issues are resolved.
  • Establishes credibility with internal customers, including underwriters, and external customers, including agents and insureds.
  • Travels as required to conduct loss control surveys and assessments in a variety of customer environments.
