About The Position

Hathaway Brown School is seeking a caring, collaborative, and experienced Long-Term Substitute Third Grade Teacher to join our Primary School from January 5, 2027 through approximately mid-March 2027. The long-term substitute will assume the day-to-day responsibilities of a third grade classroom teacher and provide continuity of instruction, routines, and support for students during the leave period. The successful candidate will create an engaging and inclusive classroom environment, deliver established curriculum, assess student learning, and communicate regularly with families and colleagues. This individual will work closely with the third grade teaching team, specialists, and Primary School leadership to ensure a smooth transition and consistent student experience. Flexibility, strong classroom management, and a genuine enthusiasm for working with elementary-aged students are essential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in elementary education or a related field preferred.
  • Prior experience teaching or working with elementary-aged students, preferably in grades 2–4.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to step into an established classroom community and provide consistent instruction and support for the duration of the assignment.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking; capable of interpreting documents and communicating effectively with parents and staff.
  • Skilled in problem-solving, data collection, and drawing valid conclusions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily instruction and classroom leadership for a third grade homeroom.
  • Implement established curriculum and lesson plans across core academic subjects.
  • Plan and adapt instruction as needed to meet the learning needs of individual students.
  • Maintain a warm, structured, and inclusive classroom environment with clear routines and expectations.
  • Assess student learning, provide feedback, and maintain appropriate records of student progress.
  • Communicate thoughtfully and professionally with families regarding classroom learning and student needs.
  • Collaborate with the third grade team, specialists, learning support staff, and Primary School leadership.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, team meetings, duties, and other school responsibilities associated with the role.
