About The Position

The Long-Term Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing coverage for a teacher/counselor who is absent for an extended period of time. The long-term substitute works the regular hours of the absent classroom teacher/counselor during his/her absence. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of the District curriculum and goals in an effective manner, ensuring a safe classroom environment, proper classroom management, and maintaining reasonable rules of conduct encouraging self-discipline and responsibility. Serves as a positive role model for students, demonstrating professionalism that includes a positive attitude, positive and respectful communication, and professional appearance.

Requirements

  • Applicants must hold at least one of the following valid licenses through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), registered in West Cook Intermediate Service Center, Region 06 (West40): Substitute License or Professional Educator License (PEL)
  • Ability to use technology to instruct in a remote learning environment when necessary
  • Possess exemplary interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and distinctly with staff and students.
  • Ability to move about frequently in the classroom and in various other parts of the school.
  • Ability to follow the policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educators License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) for grades 9-12
  • Must possess the appropriate subject-specific Grades 9-12 Illinois licensure endorsement for the position.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the designated personnel in the assigned building each morning (according to the school work day/hours) with enough time to check in, review substitute plans, and be prepared for the day when the students enter the classroom.
  • Deliver lesson plans as instructed by the regular classroom teacher and/or school administrator.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students within the assigned classroom and appropriately respond to all emergency situations.
  • Ensure the protection of equipment, materials, and facilities as appropriate.
  • Communicate in a positive way with all students, staff, and others.
  • Manage student behavior which supports a positive learning environment.
  • Keep accurate attendance records for the teaching assignment.
  • Clearly communicates expectations and adapts to individual learning needs, providing individual and small group instruction.
  • Maintain desirable discipline standards in the classroom in an atmosphere conducive to learning and assists when needed with student disciplinary control in other school areas.
  • Provides feedback to the teacher regarding instruction, discipline, and other events of the day.
  • Maintains a professional and positive rapport with parents, co-workers, and administration.
  • Participate in building events such as fire drills, evacuations, assemblies,etc.
  • Performs other job-related duties as directed by the administration.
