About The Position

The Dayton Early College Academy (DECA) is seeking a Long-Term Substitute Elementary Teacher to serve as an advocate and guide for students' learning. This role involves understanding individual student needs and gifts, helping students plan and achieve their learning goals, and creating optimal learning experiences. The teacher will report to the school principal and is expected to embody DECA's mission and core values, which include preparing future college graduates to become community leaders, putting students first, demanding success, investing in relationships, doing what's right, proving education changes lives, and finding joy. DECA serves students in grades K-12 from the Dayton Public School area, with a significant population of African-American and economically disadvantaged students, many of whom will be the first in their families to attend college. The school is committed to a rigorous academic curriculum, fostering awareness of social justice issues, and building strong community partnerships. DECA alumni have a high college graduation rate.

Requirements

  • Valid Ohio teaching license for assigned grade and/or subjects, or Ohio Substitute Teaching License.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with children and adults.
  • A broad range of interests and experience with a passion for learning.
  • Knowledge of state and national academic content standards and IDEA rules and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge in all core content areas.
  • Knowledge of pedagogical theories, perspectives, and developments.

  • Experience with technology-integration in the teaching and learning process.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a positive role model for students.
  • Assess student academic, social, and personal strengths and needs.
  • Develop meaningful, appropriate relationships with each student and their parent/guardian.
  • Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside of traditional hours when required.
  • Implement DECA PREP’s mission by instruction and action.
  • Know and understand DECA PREP’s goals and how they align to content area standards as defined by the Ohio Department of Education.
  • Celebrate student accomplishments.
  • Hold students accountable for their academic progress.
  • Advocate for students and families.
  • Forecast educational needs of each student.
  • Plan a program of instruction that is challenging and meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of each advisee.
  • Report each student’s progress, both educationally and socially, through quarterly reports, phone calls to parents, and weekly student meetings.
  • Attend faculty meetings and other staff development and planning sessions.
  • Facilitate additional academic, social, and health services for each advisee as needed.
  • Mediate student conflicts.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and factual records on each student as required by school law and sponsor agreement.
  • Employ a variety of educational techniques and establish clear objectives for each student.
  • Work with the school team on academic and social intervention strategies for students.
  • Provide supplemental and educational activities to support student growth.
  • Ensure that each student employs standard materials prescribed by school staff (planners, journals, etc.).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
  • Strive to continually improve professional competence.
