About The Position

The San Francisco Friends School (SFFS) is seeking an experienced Interim Middle School math teacher to serve as a long-term substitute for 5th-Grade Math from August 2026 to December 2026. SFFS educates K-8 students in the tradition of Quaker learning, emphasizing problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, social justice, and quiet reflection. The mathematics program at Friends is inquiry-based, conceptual, and hands-on, aiming to build students' capacity to think mathematically and solve problems with confidence. Teachers collaborate regularly, engage in curriculum development, and participate in pedagogical reflection to offer a student-centered program. This role involves teaching 5th-grade mathematics, providing feedback, fostering positive behavior, collaborating with colleagues on curriculum and assessment, organizing math events, and communicating with parents. Additionally, the teacher will serve as a middle school advisor, supporting students academically, socially, and emotionally, and will collaborate on interdisciplinary units. Participation in school-wide events, faculty meetings, and student supervision during breaks is also expected. The role requires fostering an inclusive classroom culture, integrating culturally responsive pedagogy, and attending school events and field studies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher, in a math-related field preferred
  • Late elementary or middle school teaching experience in mathematics
  • Ability to engage, support, and motivate students of all abilities and differentiate instruction within the classroom.
  • Ability to integrate culturally responsive pedagogy and reflect on teaching practice through the lens of equity and justice.

Nice To Haves

  • Four or more years of experience teaching middle school math
  • Advanced degree in mathematics or mathematics education
  • Knowledge of current pedagogy and facility with hands-on and project-based instruction
  • Ability to communicate with families in Spanish

Responsibilities

  • Classroom teaching at the Middle School level: 5th-grade Mathematics
  • Providing positive, constructive feedback and assessing student progress.
  • Fostering collaboration and positive behavior in the student community through strong classroom management.
  • Support close teamwork for curriculum development, committee involvement, and student assessment
  • Help organize and lead middle school-wide, fun math-focused events
  • Prepare timely and attentive parent communications, including quarterly student progress reports
  • Engage with parents and guardians about math content, approach, and philosophy in both proactive and responsive ways, including an evening event
  • Participating in community-building efforts, service learning, admissions, and school-wide events, including possible evening and weekend events.
  • Serve as a middle school advisor, supporting a small group of students academically, socially, and emotionally throughout the school year.
  • Facilitate three weekly advisory meetings, prepare advisees for student-led conferences in the Fall semester, maintain consistent family communication, foster a strong sense of belonging and a growth mindset.
  • Collaborate with fellow middle school teachers to plan interdisciplinary units
  • Support and participate in school-wide events, service learning, and community-building activities and events, including evening and weekend events.
  • Attend and participate in weekly faculty and staff meetings and bi-monthly division meetings
  • Supervise students during breaks and lunch periods
  • Foster a classroom culture that is welcoming, inclusive, and affirming of all students’ identities and backgrounds.

  • Attend annual 5th-grade Field Studies overnight program, as well as various field-based curricular and cultural explorations

  • Competitive, exempt salary based on experience and qualifications.
  • $2,916.67 to $6,407.50 semi-monthly pay period ($70,000 to $153,780 if annualized). Placement on the step scale based on relevant teaching experience.
