About The Position

Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway (W&LE) is seeking dedicated individuals to train as Locomotive Technicians. W&LE is one of the largest regional railroads in the United States, operating 840 miles of track and a significant fleet of locomotives. This role involves comprehensive maintenance, repair, and servicing of locomotives and their components, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the railway. The position requires a commitment to safety, willingness to undergo extensive training, and the ability to work in various conditions.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Must be able to work safely at all times in compliance with all safety and operating rules.
  • Must be available to work irregular work hours, including overtime, any shift, and any day of the week.
  • Must complete required training/apprenticeship.
  • Employees work in the shop and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Employees work in confined spaces and at or above elevated heights.
  • Ability to perform heavy work, lifting up to 85 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, balance, climb, twist, work overhead, reach, walk on uneven surfaces, and stand on hard surfaces for long periods.
  • Must complete apprenticeship program in accordance with the provisions of the labor agreement.
  • Subject to locomotive technician apprenticeship training program.
  • Employees are subject to pre-employment and frequent drug and alcohol testing.
  • All positions require pre-employment background verification, physical, and drug/alcohol screen.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance, repair, inspection, test, overhaul, reconditioning, restructuring, machining, rebuilding of locomotives, their components and systems, either in the shop or in the field.
  • Performance of all federal inspections and all repairs resulting from such inspections.
  • All service work in the Brewster repair and service area, including sanding, fueling, light repair, and supplying of locomotives.
  • Service work beyond the Brewster repair area, including light repair and supplying locomotives where light repair is undertaken.
  • All hostler work, such as the running and switching of locomotives in the Brewster repair or service areas.
  • All work generally recognized as electrical work, mechanical and/or machine work, sheet metal work, and blacksmith work associated with locomotive repair and servicing.
