About The Position

R.J. Corman Railroad Group has an immediate opening for a Locomotive Systems Installation Technician to travel to various locations for work. This role involves installing and modifying locomotive electrical and electronic equipment, performing diagnostics and repairs, and ensuring all work meets high-quality standards and industry specifications. The technician will work independently at remote locations, adhere to safety protocols, and maintain accurate records. A strong understanding of locomotive systems, electrical schematics, and safety regulations is essential.

Requirements

  • Proficient knowledge of DC and AC electronic and electrical circuits and components
  • Proficient working knowledge of a multi-meter and all standard electrical testing functions.
  • Proficient in reading and understanding locomotive electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, installation drawings, and service manuals.
  • 2+ years of experience with locomotive electrical systems
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, must understand and apply mechanical principles, make sound judgments regarding defects for repairs and replacement
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to use software based diagnostic testing and programming.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the FRA regulations pertaining to the locomotive, blue flag protection and general safety rules and demonstrate safe work practices.
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and balancing in a safe manner.
  • Requires frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Able to frequently lift and carry equipment weighing up to 60 lbs.
  • Able to push and pull with 100 lbs of force, the force required to push/pull hand brakes.
  • Must be able to perform specified duties outside in all weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of locomotive components is preferred.
  • Knowledge of power and hand tools.
  • Welding and oxygen/acetylene torching skills.
  • Basic metal fabrication skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Install locomotive electrical and electronic equipment, including event recorders, auto-start systems, cameras, power inverters, or any other related tasks assigned.
  • Fabricate, route, terminate, label, and secure wiring, cables, harnesses, conduit, and related components required for system installations and modifications.
  • Modify existing locomotive wiring and electrical circuits as required to support equipment installations and system upgrades.
  • Safely work around high and low voltage circuits, including proper de-energizing procedures and verification of circuit de-energization.
  • Work independently with limited direct supervision while performing assignments at remote locations.
  • Perform diagnostics and repairs on existing locomotive electrical equipment.
  • Perform diagnostics and repairs on base locomotive electrical systems if issues are uncovered while performing other duties.
  • Complete all work to a high-quality standard, including verifying all necessary work is completed, testing and commissioning all installed systems for proper operation and function.
  • Assist other team members with diagnostics and repairs on auxiliary locomotive electrical equipment, or base locomotive electrical systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, and parts usage to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and for future reference.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while working on locomotives, ensuring a secure working environment for oneself and colleagues.
  • Work closely with other mechanics and engineers, and support staff to address complex issues and ensure the efficient operation of locomotives.
  • Ensure that all facets of work meet industry standards and specifications to guarantee the reliability and performance of locomotives.
  • Manage inventory levels, order necessary parts, and keep track of supplies to ensure availability for installation/repair tasks and maximize efficiency.
  • Maintain working knowledge of new technologies, regulations, and industry best practices to enhance skills and knowledge in locomotive systems.
  • Be prepared to respond to emergency situations, such as breakdowns, and provide prompt and effective solutions to minimize disruptions to rail operations.
  • Effectively communicate needs, work progress, and potential issues to supervisors and other appropriate personnel.
  • Safely work with oxygen/acetylene torching for cutting and welding operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain safe and clean work area, vehicles, and other equipment.
