This position is within the Facilities Services Bureau and involves inspecting, maintaining, installing, adjusting, repairing, and rebuilding locks and detention hardware in custody facilities, structures, equipment, doors, lockers, and furniture. The role also includes opening locks and safes by manipulation and drilling, duplicating keys, changing key and cylinder combinations, establishing and modifying master key coding systems, issuing keys and locks, operating machine tools for fabrication, repairing safe locking mechanisms, and maintaining panic hardware and related door closing and locking devices. The Locksmith will interact with coworkers, order parts and supplies, advise on work progress, coordinate assistance, and drive a motor vehicle to satellite locations for security concerns and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Four years experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical and combination locking devices and the maintenance of master key systems, one year of which MUST have been working within a journey-level capacity.
  • Completion of a recognized locksmith apprentice training program of at least three years duration.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
  • Out-of-state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing.
  • Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed.
  • License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked.
  • An applicant whose driving record shows three (3) or more moving violations within the last year will not be appointed.
  • Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.
  • To qualify under Option II, applicants MUST include a photocopy of their certificate of completion of a recognized apprenticeship program at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of application filing.
  • Apprenticeship training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor-Vision of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private Post secondary, and Vocational Education.

  • Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, installs, adjusts, repairs, and rebuilds locks and detention hardware found in or on custody facilities, structures, equipment, doors, lockers, and furniture to ensure proper functioning.
  • Opens locks that cannot be opened by ordinary means and opens safes by manipulation and drilling.
  • Duplicates existing keys and makes new keys utilizing hand- and electrically-operated key cutting machines.
  • Changes key and cylinder combinations in accordance with changes in the master key system.
  • Establishes, expands, and modifies master key coding systems.
  • Issues keys and locks and keeps related distribution records.
  • Operates machine tools such as drill presses, grinders, and buffers in the fabrication and modification of lock and panic hardware parts.
  • Changes safe combinations and repairs and rebuilds safe locking mechanisms.
  • Inspects, maintains, adjusts, and repairs panic hardware and related door closing and locking devices to ensure proper functioning in emergencies.
  • Interacts in person, telephonically, and via electronic messaging with coworkers in sharing work information, ordering parts and supplies, advising of work progress, and coordinating assistance needed for the completion of work orders.
  • Drives a motor vehicle to satellite locations to address security concerns and perform periodic inspection and maintenance on locking devices.
