About The Position

Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in maintaining security for campus-wide lock system(s), installing and maintaining locks, electronic systems, and related hardware, and performing related work as required.

Requirements

Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of installing, repairing, and maintaining locks and related hardware
Knowledge of a variety of locking systems, such as mortise locks, cylindrical handles, panic bars with latching devices or vertical rods, and electric access systems
Knowledge of the use of common hand tools, machine tools, and tools common to the locksmithing trade
Knowledge of all aspects of rough-in and finish carpentry
Ability to test and troubleshoot electronic door device problems and the skill to repair low-voltage wiring or verbally communicate problems for electronic access technicians or contractor repairs
Ability and skills of carpentry to fix or repair doors or hardware issues that may not be lock-related, such as sagging, shimming, or frame adjustments
Knowledge of university practices and regulations for the dispensing and recovery of keys
Knowledge of the university keying system to provide individual keying needs without compromising departmental security requirements
High school diploma or equivalent
Possess or complete and pass the Tennessee Locksmith Certification Class or Equivalent Certification within one year of hire

Responsibilities

Maintaining security for campus-wide lock system(s)
Installing and maintaining locks, electronic systems, and related hardware
Evaluating locking and related access systems and the skill to manipulate, repair, rebuild, or reinstall them
Assessing locks and understanding the need to set up a keying system
Keying and re-keying locks to fit a particular key or set of keys on conventional cores, interchangeable cores, or master ring cylinders
Re-pinning wafer locks as well as rekeying locks
Using code books and coding keys for a particular bitting on cutting machines
Producing or duplicating keys
Picking locks
Testing and troubleshooting electronic door device problems and repairing low-voltage wiring or verbally communicating problems for electronic access technicians or contractor repairs
Fixing or repairing doors or hardware issues that may not be lock-related, such as sagging, shimming, or frame adjustments
Keeping key records so as not to lose track of keys for security purposes
Making decisions on the job or work order so as not to risk security
