About The Position

Under direction, creates and maintains computerized records of master key systems, performs maintenance work in the repair, adjustment, and changing of keyed and combination locks; and performs related work as required. This eligibility list will be good for six (6) months. We are only accepting online applications for this recruitment. All new hires will be placed at the starting salary step of this classification ($7,288). Employees are eligible for a step increase on their anniversary date each year, up to the maximum step 5 of this salary range ($7,657).

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and any combination equivalent to one year of experience as a journey-level locksmith.
  • Part-time work experience will be considered and adjusted appropriately.
  • Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver License and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, techniques, and equipment used in locksmith work.
  • Knowledge of safe working methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and rules, including fire safety and ADA compliance.
  • Ability to create and copy keys.
  • Ability to use and maintain hand tools and locksmith tools and equipment.
  • Ability to install, maintain, and repair locks and door hardware.
  • Ability to create and maintain computerized records.
  • Ability to use a propane torch safely.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with maintenance and other district personnel at a level required for successful job performance.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to read and write English at a level required for satisfactory performance.
  • Ability to lead the work of others.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and maintains computerized records of complete master key systems.
  • Creates, maintains, and searches computerized record of key codes and blanks to be used for various types of locks.
  • Drives to various district sites to inspect, maintain, install, and repair locks, including high-security locking systems.
  • Dismantles and rebuilds various types of locks and changes lock combinations and parts, including various keypad devices.
  • Makes copies of keys; stamps or engraves numbers and enters in logbook.
  • Re-keys locks and re-pins cylinders.
  • Changes tumblers on vehicles and service bodies in order to use the same key for all locks on vehicles.
  • Overhauls, adjusts, and installs door and gate closures, panic bars, handles, hardware, locks, locksets, and emergency opening or alarmed exit devices.
  • Operates a variety of key machines, including slot, barrel, Code-Max, and standard duplicating key machines.
  • Makes necessary repairs to lockers, as requested.
  • Orders parts, materials, and equipment.
  • Works overtime in emergency situations.
  • May check lockers for broken locks, loose bolts, broken catches, and metal damage.
  • May perform minor repairs and adjustments to coin operated dispensers.
  • May lead the work of others.
