About The Position

Provides skilled locksmith services to support the University community as part of Facilities Management. Responsibilities include the installation, replacement, and repair of door locks and related hardware, as well as cutting keys, rekeying, and picking locks as needed. Performs journey-level maintenance and repairs in accordance with industry and trade standards. Work is completed in response to service requests, scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, unscheduled or special projects, and the performance of all duties as assigned. Incumbents utilize standard locksmith tools, equipment, materials, and supplies while consistently following all safety rules, regulations, and precautions.

Requirements

  • At least 1–2 years of experience in locksmithing or a closely related trade
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training in the locksmith trade
  • Must be bondable
  • Basic understanding of locksmith terminology, tools, materials, and safe work practices
  • Introductory knowledge of reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and hardware schedules
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards, including ADA, NFPA, and ANSI/BHMA
  • Skilled in pinning locks, changing cores, cutting keys, and performing safe lock and hardware repairs
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track work orders, service requests, and maintenance activities
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs for door hardware and locks
  • Strong communication, organizational, and recordkeeping abilities
  • Capacity to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders to troubleshoot and resolve locksmith- and door-related issues
  • Ability to safely perform work at heights using ladders or scaffolding
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work independently and in teams
  • Ability to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and during emergency or weather-related operations
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Additional experience in locksmithing or related trades beyond the minimum requirement
  • Certification from a recognized locksmithing program or professional organization (e.g., ALOA, Associated Locksmiths of America)
  • Experience working in a higher education, healthcare, large campus environment, or government
  • Experience with electronic access control systems, keypads, and card readers
  • Advanced knowledge of keying systems, master keying, and high-security locks
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to handle complex lock and door hardware issues independently
  • Knowledge of sustainability and security best practices in building maintenance
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and/or other software used for reporting, recordkeeping, and workflow management
