About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is seeking a full-time Locator - Underground Utility Investigator to join their Wastewater Management team. This role involves receiving and processing underground utility locate tickets, distinguishing city-owned utilities, and locating various underground infrastructure. The position requires working outdoors in various weather conditions, managing locate requests, and performing mathematical computations to determine utility locations. A take-home vehicle is provided for work purposes. Employees can start and end their days remotely, but are expected to report to a job site several days a week. The role also includes an on-call rotation and potential redeployment during citywide emergencies.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Two (2) years’ experience interpreting blueprints, maps and construction drawings, and/or installing underground utilities with a preference to having experience locating underground utilities.
  • Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GIS maps
  • Prior experience locating fiber, electric, water, sewers (sanitary and storm) and gas.
  • Underground utilities locating experience
  • Experience with application software and intermediate computer skills
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Ability to be on call on a rotational basis during non-work hours
  • Desire to work independently and as a team

Responsibilities

  • Receive underground utility locate tickets generated by Colorado 811 regarding City owned utilities, process tickets prior to the due date and time.
  • Distinguish city owned utilities from other utilities, reporting covered manholes and maps that need corrections.
  • Locates publicly owned underground utilities pertaining to sanitary and storm sewers, electrical and fiber optics conduits, water supply lines and service lines and natural gas pipes.
  • Lifting manhole covers and vault lids.
  • Assists in ensuring safe working conditions by helping to control and monitor traffic.
  • Manage utility locate requests by sorting tickets, entering data, monitoring expiring tickets and sending responses by the due date.
  • Must be able to distinguish between colors to properly color code utilities and interpret markings.
  • Perform duties including answering telephone inquiries and working closely with others in a team-oriented environment.
  • Performs mathematical computations to determine utility locations
  • Operates city vehicle to drive to locate requests within the City and County of Denver
  • Work standby on a rotating basis and during that time be available to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day including weekends and holidays.
  • Provide customer service to external and internal stakeholders
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
