About The Position

We're looking for a detail-oriented Underground Utility Locator to identify and mark the location of buried utility lines — including gas, electric, water, sewer, and telecommunications — ahead of excavation, construction, and maintenance projects. This role plays a critical part in public safety and damage prevention, ensuring crews and the public are protected from utility strikes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record
  • Ability to read basic maps/blueprints and use handheld GPS/tablet devices
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Physical ability to walk long distances, bend, kneel, and work outdoors in all weather

Nice To Haves

  • Prior utility locating, construction, surveying, or damage prevention experience preferred (not always required — many companies train)
  • NULCA or state-specific locator certification a plus (or willingness to obtain)
  • Familiarity with EM locating equipment (Ridgid, Vivax-Metrotech, Radiodetection, etc.)
  • Experience with GPR equipment
  • Basic understanding of utility infrastructure (gas, electric, telecom, water/sewer)

Responsibilities

  • Respond to and complete utility locate tickets (e.g., 811/One-Call requests) within required timeframes
  • Use electromagnetic (EM) locating equipment and/or ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to detect and trace underground utility lines
  • Accurately mark utility locations using industry-standard paint colors and flags (per APWA color code)
  • Interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data to verify findings
  • Document completed locates with photos, GPS coordinates, and detailed notes
  • Communicate with excavators, contractors, and property owners on-site
  • Identify and report discrepancies between utility records and field conditions
  • Maintain and calibrate locating equipment
  • Follow all safety protocols, including traffic control and PPE requirements
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, often independently
