About The Position

In collaboration with the Chief Ophthalmic Tech Specialist, the Lead Ophthalmic Tech Specialist provides direction and education to staff at assigned location. This job serves as a role model and subject matter expert for all technical questions regarding ophthalmic procedures and techniques. This job is responsible for all regulatory activities at assigned location and performs duties of the Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist as necessary.

Requirements

  • Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) certification at least at the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) level.
  • CPR certification.
  • 5 years of experience.
  • High School / GED.
  • Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Technologist (COMT) within 18 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • 10 years' experience.
  • Experience in academic medical environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction and education to staff at assigned location.
  • Serves as a role model and subject matter expert for all technical questions regarding ophthalmic procedures and techniques.
  • Responsible for all regulatory activities at assigned location.
  • Performs duties of the Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist as necessary.
  • Organizes and delegates work to clinical staff (OA, OP, COA, COT, COMT, and CRA) at assigned location to ensure that the clinic flow at that location is smooth and consistent.
  • Provides input in the performance management process.
  • Handles all day-to-day operations of outpatient clinic independently under the direction of the attending physician.
  • Performs preliminary patient work ups and leadership of staff without prior approval.
  • Seeks advice and guidance from attending physician or Chief Ophthalmic Tech Specialist on an as needed, situational basis.
  • Practices within the boundaries of regulations governing medical assistants in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Follows The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
  • Follows VCUHS policies, procedures and established practice.
