Locate Technician - Gas - Richmond, VA
About The Position
Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage prevention solutions to utility companies and municipalities, as well as private utility-locating services to homeowners and contractors. The Locate Technician helps prevent damage to underground utilities during excavation by locating and marking facilities including gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, cable television, and fiber lines. The role involves using technical equipment, interpreting work orders and maps, communicating with customers and excavation crews, and working independently in outdoor settings across rural and urban areas. On-call work may be required before or after normal business hours.
Requirements
- Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.
- Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
- Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to access restricted and/or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong work ethic.
- Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and send and receive email.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to walk varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas and in varied weather conditions.
- May need to walk up to 5 miles in one day, several times a week.
Responsibilities
- Use mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground utility facilities, including telephone, electrical, cable television, gas, fiber optic, water, and sewer lines.
- Communicate and interact daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues.
- Interpret job order tickets and respond appropriately to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Read maps and blueprints to accurately locate utilities.
- Determine efficient routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas.
- Remove and replace manhole lids.
