About The Position

Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage prevention solutions to utility companies and municipalities, as well as private utility-locating services to homeowners and contractors. The company locates and marks underground gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, cable, and fiber facilities to help prevent damage during excavation. This role serves the Hattiesburg, Mississippi area and involves fieldwork in rural and urban locations, with a focus on safety, accurate utility locations, and customer service. The Locate Technician uses mechanical and technical equipment, maps, and blueprints to locate underground facilities. The technician communicates with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners, interprets job tickets, plans efficient routes, and may remove and replace manhole lids. Instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification. The role may require on-call work before or after normal business hours and physical activity across varied terrain and weather conditions.

Requirements

Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.
Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to access restricted and/or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
Excellent communication skills.
Strong work ethic.
Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and send and receive email.
Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
Ability to walk varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in and around construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas, in all types of weather.
May need to walk up to five miles in one day, several times a week.

Responsibilities

Use mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground telephone, electrical, cable television, gas, fiber optic, water, and sewer facilities.
Communicate daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues.
Interpret job order tickets and respond appropriately to support customer satisfaction.
Read maps and blueprints to locate utilities accurately.
Determine efficient routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas.
Remove and replace manhole lids.
