Locate Technician - Baton Rouge, LA
About The Position
Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage-prevention services to utility companies, municipalities, homeowners, and contractors. The company locates and marks underground gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, cable, and fiber-optic facilities to help prevent damage during excavation. The Locate Technician works in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area, serving customers and supporting safe excavation through accurate utility locating and marking. The role involves working independently outdoors, communicating with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners, and responding to locate requests, including when on call.
Requirements
- Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.
- Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
- Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to access restricted or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong work ethic.
- Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and send and receive email.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to walk across varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas, in all types of weather. May involve walking up to five miles in one day several times a week.
Responsibilities
- Use mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground utility facilities, including telephone, electric, cable television, gas, fiber-optic, water, and sewer lines.
- Communicate daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues.
- Interpret job-order tickets and respond appropriately to support customer satisfaction.
- Read maps and blueprints to accurately locate utilities.
- Determine efficient routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas.
- Remove and replace manhole lids.
