About The Position

Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage-prevention solutions to utility companies and municipalities, as well as private utility-locating services to homeowners and contractors. The company uses 811-call center requests and established on-call contracts to locate and mark underground gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, cable, and fiber facilities. Its priority is to provide high-quality work and customer service while ensuring safety before, during, and after each project.

The Locate Technician uses mechanical and technical equipment to locate underground utilities, communicates with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues, and interprets job tickets, maps, and blueprints. The role also involves planning efficient routes, removing and replacing manhole lids, completing documentation, and working outdoors across varied terrain and weather conditions. Training is provided, and instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.

Requirements

• Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.
• Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
• Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• No accidents within the previous 12 months.
• Ability to access restricted or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong work ethic.
• Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and receive and send email.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
• Ability to walk across varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in and around construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all types of weather.
• May need to walk up to five miles in one day several times a week.

Responsibilities

• Use mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground facilities, including telephone, electrical power, cable television, gas, fiber optic, water, and sewer lines.
• Communicate and interact daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners to discuss locate issues.
• Interpret job order tickets and respond appropriately to ensure customer satisfaction.
• Read maps and blueprints to ensure accurate location of utilities.
• Determine efficient routes to locates in rural and urban areas.
• Remove and replace manhole lids.
