The Live Hanger works on Pilgrim’s poultry production team, handling live birds and helping deliver safe, high-quality poultry products. The primary task is to firmly place both feet of each chicken into moving shackles, following USDA and company product standards and procedures. The sixth hanger also catches and re-hangs birds hung by only one leg, while the first hanger moves the belt forward to bring in birds. This hands-on, fast-paced role involves using tools, including knives, manual labor, and production equipment. Team members follow operating procedures and quality and quantity expectations, monitor equipment, maintain a clean work area, and comply with safety, food safety, biosecurity, and animal welfare guidelines. Employees may be assigned to other production duties as needed, including cage dumping and loading, trailer rotation, floor relief, and backing up the killer. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 5:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., with some weekend work required. The role requires working in hot or cool temperatures depending on the weather, standing and using hands for 8–11 hours per day, and lifting 50 pounds or more. Employees work close to other team members at some stations, less than three feet apart. Pilgrim’s is a global food company with more than 62,000 team members. The company describes a commitment to safety, team-member development, and career growth through learning and development programs.
