About The Position

Travelers offers the strength of a national legal organization committed to professional development while maintaining a local focus. Counsel serves as a business partner and trusted advisor, handling litigation arising from claims against policyholders or the company from inception through trial and appeal. The role manages a caseload predominantly of low to moderate complexity and delivers proactive, high-quality case handling and optimal results for Travelers’ insured customers. The position may be filled at a level above or below the level included in the posting.

Requirements

• Juris Doctorate or equivalent international legal degree from an accredited law school.
• At least 2 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
• Active license in good standing to practice law in the state or states where representation is required.
• Regularly handle hearings, trials, dispositive motion arguments, depositions, or other court proceedings, and be able to travel to those meetings.
• A valid driver's license is required depending on the location.

Nice To Haves

• 3 or more years of insurance defense litigation experience as a practicing attorney.
• Experience independently handling cases from inception through trial or hearing and appeal.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to present information on litigated matters to diverse audiences.
• Ability to foster collaborative relationships with colleagues, customers, and business partners to deliver exceptional customer service.
• Persuasive legal writing and oral advocacy skills.
• Strong legal research skills and ability to use technology.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail, urgency, and responsiveness.

• Flexible and agile mindset, with willingness to take on new challenges as needs evolve.

Responsibilities

• Develop and apply litigation skills and techniques to try cases to verdict or negotiate resolution.
• Conduct legal research and produce persuasive legal writing and presentations.
• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery, and other documents.
• Independently attend court events, depositions, and other appointments.
• Provide case analysis and recommendations to insured clients and claim partners on file-handling strategies.
• Build and maintain strong internal and external client and business partner relationships.
• Provide advice and training to Claim partners and clients.
• Effectively use available technology, the case management system, and automation.
• Travel as required to meet business needs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
